Critical Rules to Know

Trailing Maximum Drawdown

CRITICAL

Your drawdown trails upward with your high watermark. If your account reaches $53,000 on a 50K, your max drawdown floor rises to $51,000 — it never drops back down. This is the #1 reason traders fail the Topstep Combine.

Scaling Plan

CRITICAL

In the Express Funded Account, contract sizing is limited based on your current profit. You start with reduced size and scale up as your cushion grows. Violating the scaling plan instantly terminates the account.

Allowed Instruments

IMPORTANT

All CME Group futures including E-mini and Micro E-mini contracts (ES, NQ, YM, RTY, GC, SI, CL, NG, 6E, 6B, ZB, ZN, ZC, ZS, ZW, and more). Crypto futures excluded.

Trading Hours

IMPORTANT

All positions must be closed 10 minutes before the daily close (4:50 PM CT). No overnight positions allowed during the Combine or Express Funded Account.

Consistency

NOTE

No single best day should exceed 50% of your total profits. This prevents "lottery ticket" trading and rewards consistent, methodical execution.

AQS INDICATOR ADVANTAGE FOR TOPSTEP

The trailing max drawdown is the single most dangerous rule in the Topstep Combine. Alpha Regime's multi-market "Safe-to-Trade" classification stops you from entering positions during volatile regime shifts — the exact moments where drawdown breaches occur. Combined with Alpha Signal's 1:3+ asymmetric risk brackets, you never risk more than your mathematical edge allows.

How Each AQS Indicator Helps You Pass Topstep

Alpha Regime

Classifies NQ, ES, YM, GC, and CL into Green (trade), Yellow (caution), or Red (stand-down) states. Prevents entries during volatile regime transitions that cause trailing drawdown breaches.

Alpha Signal

Provides non-repainting execution triggers with pre-computed asymmetric risk brackets (1:3+ reward-to-risk). Every entry has a defined stop that protects your trailing max drawdown floor.

Alpha Fusion

Detects institutional order flow absorption at PDH/PDL levels. Aligns your entries with smart money accumulation rather than retail breakout traps — critical for the consistency rule.

Alpha Explosion

Identifies cash open (9:30 AM EST) volatility compression breakouts with volume verification. High-probability setups that build profit cushion quickly without excessive drawdown exposure.

4-Step Strategy to Pass Topstep

A systematic, repeatable process using AQS indicators.

01

Wait for Alpha Regime Green

Before any trade, confirm that Alpha Regime shows a Green (Safe-to-Trade) classification across the correlated basket. If NQ is Green but ES is Red, the regime is mixed — stand down.

02

Identify Institutional Levels with Alpha Fusion

Look for bid/ask delta absorption at PDH, PDL, and key liquidity pools. These levels represent where institutions are accumulating, providing high-probability entry zones.

03

Execute with Alpha Signal Triggers

Wait for Alpha Signal's non-repainting entry trigger at the institutional level. The pre-computed 1:3+ risk bracket ensures your stop-loss protects your trailing max drawdown floor.

04

Scale Targets with Alpha Explosion

On high-velocity breakout days (especially the 9:30 AM cash open), Alpha Explosion identifies dynamic multi-target scaling opportunities to build your profit cushion.

Frequently Asked Questions — Topstep

Can I use AQS indicators on the Topstep Trading Combine?
Yes. AQS indicators are standard NinjaTrader 8 Add-Ons (.dll files) that operate entirely client-side. Topstep allows all NinjaTrader 8 indicators. Our indicators do not send orders, manage positions, or interact with the broker API — they are pure analytical overlays.
What is trailing max drawdown and how does Alpha Regime protect against it?
Trailing max drawdown means your loss limit rises with your highest equity point. Alpha Regime prevents entries during volatile market regimes (classified as "Red" or "Yellow"), which are the exact conditions where sudden drawdowns occur. By only trading Green regimes, you avoid the #1 cause of Combine failure.
How long does it take to pass the Topstep Combine with AQS indicators?
While results vary by individual, AQS indicators are engineered to provide consistent, high-probability setups. The Topstep Combine has no maximum time limit, allowing you to trade only during optimal regime conditions. Many users report passing within 10–20 trading sessions by focusing on quality over quantity.
Does Topstep have a consistency rule?
Yes. Your best single trading day cannot exceed 50% of your total Combine profits. AQS indicators address this by providing consistent daily setups rather than relying on a single large win.
What happens after I pass the Topstep Combine?
You receive an Express Funded Account with real capital. Profits are yours from day one — 100% of the first $10,000, then a 90/10 split. Payouts are processed bi-weekly after your first 5 trading days.
